A Very Busy Month

My blogging has been rather non-existant of late; it has been an absurdly busy month. Among the highlights:

  • deli & I got engaged. This should surprise no-one, as sharing webspace like this is just as much of a committment as marriage. Really, it is. Anyway, we’re both very happy, and will be even happier when the ring finally arrives.
  • We’ve done several new chapters of Fish for Fish, and even put a PDF version up on Drivethrucomics
  • I’ve written 90% of the Scoundrel supplement for Traveller, and am about to plunge back into Alpha Complex for more PARANOIA
  • I’ve also helped put together lots of material for the PARANOIA 25th anniversary DVD, and gotten involved with 1d4 new freelance projects.
I’m also running two ongoing campaigns. One is the Z-Space Traveller game I blogged about earlier, the other is a D&D 4e game.

The Company of Heroes

The great Selentine Empire fell hundreds of years ago; few remember it now save sages and wizards. After the empire’s collapse, Ulland slid into darkness and anarchy. Barbarians raided from the snowy wilderlands of the north, goblins and orcs crawled out of the underworld, and monsters emerged from the forest to prey on the common folk. The only law was the sword.

A hundred years ago, Veregis conquered all his rivals and was acclaimed king. For three generations, the Peace of Veregis held sway. Some say Veregis’ grandson, Veremar, was possessed by demons; others say he was just a weak and cruel man. He was murdered by his vassals. Once again, anarchy’s dread shadow fell across Ulland.

Now, there is a King in Ulland again. Young Veregil is of the line of Wise Veregis, and although he is but a stripling, he has the support of most of the barons and lords. The land is sorely wounded, true, but if a king sits again in High Alante, then perhaps it will begin to heal.

King Veregil’s Proclamation

Let it be known that those adventurers and men-at-arms who slay the monsters and devils that daily assail my people, who act with honour and bring the king’s peace and king’s law to the land, they shall be accounted great in my sight and rewarded with grants of land and patents of nobility.

Campaign Setup

Basically, slay enough goblins and monsters and you get a barony. At least, that’s the king’s advertising pitch. You guys are a band of adventurers in the wild north of Ulland. It’s mostly wilderness, although it was formerly civilised by the Selentine Empire (Rome with more wizards). There are a few towns and villages, some of which are loyal to Veregil and others to the local warlords.

The Game So Far

We’re three sessions in. The PCs are a Genasi Warlord, a Goliath Fighter and an Elf Ranger; thus far, they’ve recovered a stolen religious relic from goblins and learned a bit about local politics, and they’ve just found out about a suspiciously important-sounding prophecy about a coming darkness and impending doom. There are only three player characters, but they’re heavily optimised, so I’m having trouble designing encounters that are tough enough to give them a fight, but don’t swamp them with foes. It’s the opposite complaint to most 4e games; the bad guys aren’t lasting too long, they’re getting blown away too quickly, and I may end up increasing hit point totals. With luck, we’ll have a fourth player before they hit third level.
